ABOUT KAREN
I bring decades of experience in nonverbal communication, movement and dance. I am a Certified Movement Analyst in Laban Movement Analysis, a dance educator, choreographer/movement designer, a movement therapist, a somatics practitioner, and a new Canadian permanent resident.
My background includes dance performance and choreography, education, dance therapy, nonverbal communication, and movement research in neuroscience. I have coached actors, dancers, politicians, and business leaders in specific nonverbal communications techniques, character development, and healthy living.
Political leaders
I help politicians become more comfortable in their own skin (as opposed to trying to communicate in ways they have been told will “work”), I prep and coach the nonverbal aspects of public presentations such as speeches and interviews, and I analyze the movement behavior of politicians for the media. Business leaders
In addition to the individual coaching work, I have worked with groups of middle managers at Microsoft and have brought young executives into cross-cultural understanding at GE. I build group experiences that result in a sense of shared purpose and/or that allow a group to understand different styles within the team. I have studied the movement of specific world dance cultures and can help you learn to recognize specific features and find common ground.
Leadership
I have presented workshops at the International Leadership Association conferences in Prague (2009) and Boston (2010) and have coached women on nonverbal aspects of leadership in the workplace.
Movement design for theatre: I have helped actors and directors create specific characters (including recreating Lee Harvey Oswald and Elvis Presley’s movement patterns), designed period and style movement for Renaissance, Baroque, Victorian, Southern US, and other movement “dialects.”
I have authored a book about Rudolf Laban, researched expressive movement and neuroscience, fostered standards-based and evidence-based curricula, articles, and reports. I have studied global dance practices and firmly believe that through an understanding of how our world-views manifest in the nonverbal, we can find ways to work together and create better communities and a saner planet.
